The dining experience of returning to Hogwarts

‘Los Tres Calderos’ is a restaurant in Fuengirola that invites the diner to feel part of the main settings of the films of the Harry Potter fantasy saga

In the mailbox, an envelope in a faded beige tone. Red ink stamp. There is no doubt, it is time to return to Hogwarts. To the misfortune of fans of the saga, it is quite likely that today we will not receive the long-awaited letter inviting us to study at the best school of wizardry in the history of literature. However, there is the possibility of alleviating, even a little, the pain of not being able to play a game of Quidditch or drink a butter beer in the Three Broomsticks, the mythical Hogsmeade tavern.

In Fuengirola there is a restaurant that seems to be taken precisely from that picturesque village in the universe that JK Rowling created. It is called ‘Los Tres Calderos’ and is located on Calle Hernán Cortés. The establishment, which opened its doors in January, is a true recreation of the settings in which the Harry Potter saga is set.

Its almost 100 square meters are divided into four rooms, each one representing the houses of Hogwarts. All the decoration is handmade by the owner of the business, the chef from Malaga, Adam Sánchez, and his group of friends. «We have thrown a lot of Cudeca, of things from the market (…). We spent two months doing the decoration, “says Adam.

The chef devised the project six years ago. It was his final project of the higher degree of cooking that he studied in Madrid; Even then he was clear about the artisanal and ecological component that he would have. Thus, he assures that “the philosopher’s stone is a piece of soap painted with nail polish” and that the boxer willow that is next to the statue of Dobby, the mythical elf from the JK Rowling saga , “is made of mops and plastics”.

When he ventured to start the business they thought that he would be visited only by “four geeks like them”. Today it is practically impossible to eat in the restaurant without a reservation. And it is that it turns out to be quite an experience for adults and young people, despite the fact that its owner assures that “it is not the London studios”, an attraction that opens to the public, in the United Kingdom, the experience of seeing the sets in which tapes were recorded. This restaurant in Fuengirola allows you to sit by the fireplace in the Gryffindor common room, home to the protagonists Harry, Ron and Hermione, while browsing the menu that recreates the hobby magazine that the curious Luna Lovegood (a fictional character incarnated by actress Evanna Lynch) popularized: The Quibbler.

A varied menu

About the menu, Adam Sánchez was clear that “he wanted to set up a restaurant where he could do whatever he wanted”, since it combines typical gastronomy from many cultures. He himself defines it as “all the branches of street food but mixed”.

Thus, as a starter, you can taste some hippogriff gyozas (which Hagrid, the ranger of the school of sorcery, did not dare to try out of respect for Buckbeak, one of the most tender fantastic beings in the saga), a dragon eggs or fried roots, which is ultimately a sautéed vegetable and spice.

As main dishes, there are meats, hamburgers and even noddles. The most daring can dare to try the Nagini steak (without being caught by the evil par excellence, the unspeakable Voldemort) or the Lestrange noddles, accompanied by cheese aubergines and cane syrup.

The main objective of making such a diverse menu is to achieve, according to the owner of the restaurant, “capture that public that does not know what to eat in other restaurants.” With this statement it refers to celiacs, vegetarians or people with some type of intolerance to any product or ingredient.

The gastronomic experience is completed with the possibility of attending one of the shows that return from this month of September. «Now we have one of the Beauxbatons girls, they do a dance and then they take pictures with the people (…). In the future we want to put one of the death eaters, “says the cook of ‘Los Tres Calderos’. In addition, they have a showcase where the artisans of the province can sell their products and get some money: “We give them visibility. Funkos, wands, and more crafts,” Adam details.

To get to ‘The Three Cauldrons’ you will probably have to take the train from platform nine and three quarters or use the floo powders, although perhaps it would be better to settle for a flying broom.
